Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present the contribution of the Expressionist movement to cultural heritage. The focus will be on the cinematography, as Expressionism brought the German films to the attention of the general public and film critics around the world. The specific characteristics of the Expressionist films will be discussed throughout the article and the case study will emphasize the story and the complexity of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1919), the first Expressionist film, which aroused many reactions over the last 95 years, since its premiere, in 1920.
