The Age of the Worldness. Immersion as a New Poetics of Reception

Summary/Abstract: The article aims to combine cognitive narratology, psychonarratology, media studies, VR philosophy and game studies in an interdisciplinary study on the phenomenon of immersion in contemporary literature and culture. Contrary to the common tendency of defining immersion as associated primarily with interactive or telematic experience, Maj argues that one should follow Marie-Laure Ryan’s or Lisbeth Klastrup’s remarks on new reading strategies in “world-centered” narratives that create a sense of the so called “worldness”. Therefore, through a comparative analysis of video games, 3D movies, VR devices and world-building literature Maj proposes the theoretical concept of “resident reception,” so as to examine how it may be possible to “imaginatively inhabit a world”.
