Summary/Abstract: “The German schools in Romania during the First World War” is not a typical subject for a part of history dealing, traditionally, with fights, fronts or military tactics. The term of German schools generalises an abstract concept of schools in which German is taught as native or intensive language. Moreover, they are also schools, such as Catholic teaching institutions, for which the German mentality is very important. General and particular conditions apply to the German schools. Romanian legislation had provisions for the didactic methods, the school uniform, hygiene, food quality. The system is too centralised and gives no option for incentives. Additionally, German schools had specific curricula and relations with the central teaching authority. Motivation of enrolling into German schools and their perception to the Romanian society are also touchy subjects. This article tries to enlighten few questions about the German schools, being based on original Archives documents: what are the activities of the German schools and what makes them special for the Romanian teaching system at the beginning of XXth century?
