Summary/Abstract: The activities performed in a supply chain ought to be consistent with the consumers' needs and expectations. There are two basic mechanisms of a material flow management. On one side, the activities posses anticipatory characteristics which means they are forecast driven. On the other hand, the activities in a supply chain are adaptive, originated by the real customer demand. The major goal of the paper is to identify the role of selected forecasting methods and rules determining the anticipatory activities in 238 examined supply chains of manufacturing companies. In order to identify anticipatory activities, the extent of application of different types of manufacturing strategies has been analyzed. Those strategies are then used as discriminant variables of a research sample. The obtained classes of supply chains have been interpreted and profiled specifically regarding the forecasting practices, namely the extent of forecasting techniques, characteristics of data used in a prediction of sales, as well as the purposes of the forecast preparation.
