GENERAL SITUATION OF TURGUTLU PRISON AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20th CENTURY

Summary/Abstract: In the early periods of the Ottoman Empire, imprisonment was not used as a means of punishment. However, later on, following the Edict of Tanzimat, it was adopted as an effective punishment method. As a result of this, the newly adopted laws and regulations put the improsenment at the core of its criminal justice while making prisons as a center of attention. This work, based on the analysis of the Regulations regarding Detention Houses and Prisons dated 1880, gives information on physical conditions of Turgutlu prison at the beginning of the 20th century, remonts made in it, the number of its prisoners and personnel.
