This paper is based on the fact that the main work of Czech Romanticism, Karel Hynek Mácha’s poem Máj (1836), was well-received first by a German-speaking and only later followed by a Czech-speaking readership. By means of the German Máj translations questions are discussed regarding why the German translators engaged themselves to such an extent in a work of Czech literature, the comprehension of which confronted them with enormous linguistic complications as well as the extent to which their translations depended on the conditions of multilingualism and a territorially-determined identity in Bohemia.
