Summary/Abstract: This paper follows the origins and the constitutional evolution of the idea of citizenship in modern Romania. It analyzes the Romanian constitutionalism, the juridical documents and the political debates from the mid of the 19th century, the semantic evolution of the idea of citizenship: from the naturalization of foreign subjects to the antiSemitic legislation formulas. The consecration of the idea of citizenship and the sophistication of the juridical language shapes the Romanian modern state. The specific evolution of the idea of citizenship gives the features of the Romanian modernity as we know it.
