Summary/Abstract: Social capital is becoming more and more noticeable and appreciated as a growth factor. This newly coined term has been in scientific circulation a short time. Hence, both the term itself and the idea behind it are susceptible of various interpretations. The purpose of the present article is to try to look at social capital from an economic perspective which views social capital as a number of beneficial external effects in the form of informal values and ethical standards. Social capital, defined in that way, is part of an extended social order which is not a result of human intent. It arises spontaneously and informal values and ethical standards (coming from some natural structure) in organised structures regenerate themselves
