Summary/Abstract: One of the most important symbols of any nation is its coat of arms, therefore it is simultaneously a symbol with legal significance and normative regulation and the most important identification sign. The article defines the “national coat of arms” concept and follows the development of the normative regulation of the national coat of arms under the Tarnovo Constitution. The most important moments of the period of the establishment of the coat of arms as a national symbol are highlighted. The changes made in the image of the national coat of arms since the restoration of the Third Bulgarian State (1878) until the establishment of the first socialist coat of arms of Bulgaria are examined.
