Summary/Abstract: Poverty and social exclusion among children and youth constitutes in contemporary Poland a very serious social problem. Social exclusion has negative effects on the quality of human capital, reduces the activity, entrepreneurship and innovation and increases the cost of the state. Individuals who grow up in poor families are much more likely to be poor in early adulthood. Children from poor families have to restrict their needs (including educational needs) to a minimum. Poverty and related disadvantages involve many aspects of children’s lives that affects both the educational opportunities that children will have and the educational outcomes that they will likely experience. This article attempts to analyze the situation of children from poor families. Data that were used in this article come from the regional study on social exclusion in Podkarpacie region, which was conducted in 2010.
