Summary/Abstract: The development of modern economies are more and more dependent and based on the intensive growth. Social capital is one of the most important factors determining the development of knowledge-based economies. The aim of this article is to present the issue of social capital in the context of today's knowledge-based economies, revealing its characteristics and discussing the importance in contemporary economics. Under analysis were taken into account six representative indicators for Poland, Denmark and Bulgaria, which examine key areas for development of social capital: trust, social participation and active citizenship, and whose level determines the quality and level of sophistication of the capital in the economy. In paper, authors have also compared indicators of social capital between selected European Union member states
