The Kielce Region in Professor Karol Dejna’s dialectological studies

Summary/Abstract: Linguistic studies of the Kielce Region do not have a long tradition. The greatest achievement is noted in the area of onomastics and dialectology. A particular contribution to the development of dialect studies has been made by Professor Karol Dejna. In the article an attempt is made to assess the scholarly output of the founder of the Łódź School of Dialectology in relation to the Kielce region. Both the number of studies and their differentiation (questionnaires, dialect atlases, a collection of regional folk vocabulary, scholarly articles) are all evidence of the major contribution of Professor Dejna to the understanding of the language of the Kielce region. The results of Professor Dejna’s research into selected grammatical (phonetic, morphological) and lexical phenomena form a basis for comparison with the results of recent regional studies that take into account differences in the speech of various generations and language awareness of the present-day rural inhabitants.
