Hypercorrection in Polish dialects

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with an important issue for both dialects and general language, i.e. a violation of language norm. Language hypercorrection (hyper accuracy) in Polish dialects is the result, among others, of insufficient knowledge of the norm and a desire to avoid dialects by its users; it can also be the result of the internal development of a dialect or the impact another language system on Polish dialects (eg. Ukrainian dialects on Polish ones and vice versa). The meaning of the term language hypercorrection used in linguistic literature is discussed comprehensively, and different type language hypercorrection relating to the various language subsystems are presented. The recorded speech samples of the residents of one of the villages of the Kielce Region allow to get acquainted with the place language hypercorrectness in the awareness of dialect users and ways of talking about them.
