Summary/Abstract: “The Illustrated Weekly”, which was published between 1859 and 1939, dealt with linguistic issues rather rarely. An analysis of texts from 1908, 1918 and 1928 points to a high degree of generality of formulated opinions. They were also politically influenced, and both of these features allowed readers to understand journalists rather well. Changes in the choice of language started from national trivia items in texts. In 1908 texts served to build the national identity, or to satisfy the curiosity of the reader. In time such publications were gradually reduced in favor of texts that drew attention to the need for systematic knowledge based work of shaping the language in 1918. Later on (1928), the paper focused on publications proposing to look at a language as a tool to communicate effectively. The changes that can be observed in these different years would indirectly suggest a gradual maturation of the linguistic consciousness of the Polish society in the early 20th century.
