Summary/Abstract: The text focuses on the functioning of dialectal and folk lexis in rural reality with the possibility to specify both groups of lexis and forms of interpretation of the material in dictionaries, atlases and dialectal monographies. A question about dialectal lexis posed by dialectologists actually boils down to two ways of understanding the term: 1. equating folk lexis with dialectal one and using them interchangeably; 2. applying the label ‘folk’ to the whole inventory of rural lexis without the division into dialectal and non-dialectal. The approach adopted in the article is the one of Karol Dejna. According to it, folk lexis encompasses every transcribed word of peasant speech extending dialectological research onto various aspects of the linguistic picture of the contemporary countryside transmitted both by dialectal and Poland-wide lexis.
