Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses polarised public debates in the media that deal with the category of Polishness and with the role model of a Pole and a patriot in the context of the reckoning with the Polish-Jewish past. This problem is illustrated by the case of a debate on Władysław Pasikowski’s film Aftermath in 2012. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the dynamics of a media debate and the strategies in public discourse that regulate, intensify or suppress a dispute over the so called difficult past. The study questions the condition of contemporary media debates and their productivity and it discusses symptomaticity of the references in the debate to the category of Polishness towards the tensions and divisions in Polish society. The present argumentation is based on the discourse analysis carried out on the corpus of 54 articles from the Polish press.
