Problems of the History of Bulgarian Folklore

Summary/Abstract: There is still no complete work on the history of Bulgarian Folklore. The writing of such a history is one of the tasks of the Institute of Folklore at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In connection with the preparation of a History of Bulgarian Folklore it is imperative to consider beforehand a number of theoretical, methodological and organizational questions. An appraisal of the research carried out so far on the history of Bulgarian folklore is made in this article and the basic theoretical and methodological positions on which the folklorist-historian should base his work are outlined. Questions on the subject and the structure of a historical work of this kind are put forward, together with those of the relations of folklore with other similar general sciences, the periodization of the history of Bulgarian Folklore, the search for historical material and the creation of the necessary documentation, as well as for new editions of the large folklore volumes of the past. The article emphasizes the great national importance of a summarizing scientific work on the history of Bulgarian folklore.
