The Etymology of the Word Musliman

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the etymology of the word musliman in the Bosnian language and how it came from Arabic to Bosnian. This word has not been examined in the language area of Balkans so far, and there is no agreement on its etymology in oriental languages either. The first part of the paper casts light on the origin of the word musliman. This word goes back to the Arabic root s-l-m, and its meaning was pejorative at first. That kind of meaning was borrowed from Persian but it disappeared later. Today in the Persian language the word mosalmān has the same meaning as the word muslim in Arabic. he second part of the paper is about its moving from Persian to Turkish and from Turkish to Bosnian. Here I explained the different forms of this word in Turkish and how one of them (musliman) moved to Bosnian. It can be concluded that the Arabic word muslim has gone through many changes in every oriental language (Arabic, Persian and Turkish) up to its contemporary form musliman which is currently used in Bosnian.
