Summary/Abstract: Language is one of the most important elements of culture, one of its integral parts, both the creator and the creature. It is the most perfect tool of social communication, the simplest and the most prevalent means of expression, allowing culture to be expressed and being at the same time permeated by it. Culture, though transmitted in various ways and not always necessarily by verbal means, nevertheless most often comes to us through language which is, in a way, its privileged “path of access”. In this article, the author, based on selected stories by G. Simenon, examines a small part of this path, the French imparfait past tense, in one of its specific uses which expresses temporal progression or completed action (imparfait narratif), and the(im)possibility of translating this form and the meanings it contains into the Polish language.
