Summary/Abstract: The problem of traditional food and its consumption is not investigated thoroughly, and it is an important aspect of Bulgarian folk culture. In this article some elements of the traditional etiquette in everyday feeding of Bulgarian peasants are studied. The data is from the end of XIX to the middle of XX c. The traditional etiquette in feeding comprises various rules of conduct preserved before, during and in the end of feeding. These rules are represented by certain actions and formulae, strictly preserved and recreated in a definite consequence and thus stereotypizide. The investigation consists of four main parts: I. Elements of etiquette in everyday feeding of Bulgarian peasants in the second half of XIX and the first half of XX c. The table. The' food. The arrangements. II. Actions and objects considered taboo. III. Feeding during field work and in the course of mutual labour assistance. IV. Functions of food. The adherence to the rules of etiquette ensures benefits to the family, and the reverse — their frustration may result in different kinds of disaster and disorder. The etiquette in feeding changes throughout the centuries, but its most rational elements are still preserved in everyday life of Bulgarian peasants.
