Summary/Abstract: The paper introduces the audience to the evolutionary path of Grammar as developed by Noam Chomsky. The shift from one approach to another is and will always be motivated by the same tension between descriptive and explanatory adequacy. From another perspective, it is only the aquisition of grammatical competence that underlies the Chomskyan approach. The paper aims to present ways of relating structuralist and functionalist views on analysing the structure of the language.
