Summary/Abstract: ”You don’t tell deliberate lies, but sometimes you have to be evasive.” (Margaret Thatcher) Though not a President, or due to this fact, Margaret Thatcher may be telling the truth. But how can evasive speakers become so persuasive? Do their speeches betray their personality? This paper aims to analyse how presidential speeches shape nations and the extent to which they mirror the speakers’ true opinions. Drawing upon Norman Fairclough’s and Theo van Leeuwen’s theoretical approaches to Critical Discourse Analysis and social representations, respectively, we attempt to demonstrate that by means of linguistic and social representations, discursive practices serve to establish or conceal relations of power and dominance between interactants, between national, ethnic, religious, sexual, political and cultural majorities and minorities. ”I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few.” (Adolf Hitler)
