Summary/Abstract: The Parish Registers, official letters sent by Bishops and Franciscan provincials to the parish priests and to influential people and institutions, and the Franciscan chronicles, Islamic court registers (sijils) of Islamic religious law judges as well as other sources, have recorded a number of marriages in accordance with Sharia law contracted by Catholics within the territory of Ottoman Bosnia. These marriages greatly burdened the pastoral work of the Catholic clergy who didn’t consider these marriages to be valid and the marriages weakened the moral of the people from whom the married couples originated, therefore spurring the process of islamisation. In the Parish Registers of the Skopje Parish, which comprised the broader area of the upper Vrbas River in the western part of the central Bosnia, dozens of marriages according to Sharia law were registered. The first one was registered in 1760 and the last in 1843.
