Austrian education governance restructuring during Maria Theresa

Summary/Abstract: During the reign of Maria Theresa, education on the Habsburg territory has seen a real growth period. In this regard, a number of legislative measures were taken which were concerned with the type of schools and the education shape, the organization of their teaching methods, the value of learning subjects, assessment modalities, the shape of the graduation studies and the possibility of continuing studies. A very important decision was to introduce compulsory education to primary cycle, which also allowed poor children access to education. For most people, the "rescuing" measure had been both for those established schools for children whose parents labored in factories or mines and for schools with disabled children, who previously had not access to regular schools.
