Rumors, news and history: some examples

Summary/Abstract: In the past, as much as in the present, rumors and news were everyday life habitual elements. Thus, one of the historian’s challenge is to discern in what measure our ancestors were able to distinguish between the false and the credible information. It is also necessary to perceive as correct as possible the manner in which such information were used in the communication process and, consequently, shaped the political decision. The present paper focuses rest on some case studies which present a large variety of situations: from false information which was spread in order to produce a certain effect, to news which equally include veridical elements and plain fabrications, up to to misunderstanding of genuine, veridical news. The examples suggest how difficult it can be to accurately understand some medieval documents and how necessary is to consider the context in which those texts were actually drafted.
