Summary/Abstract: Starting from a papyrological and an epigraphic source, the author attempts to reconstitute – based on the career of a fleet commander, M. Valerius Maximianus – the role of the Roman State in ensuring, through naval transport, the logistic necessities of the troops stationed on the Lower Danube limes in the 2nd century AD.
