Summary/Abstract: The Republic of India is becoming more and more respectable economic power on the international arena. It is the intensively being developed sector of services, constituting 50% of GDP aiming mostly at foreign markets, which constitutes the root cause of the dynamic economic development of the country. India has been an invariably chosen place of outsourcing/offshoring for many years, which is supported by worldwide rankings, conducted, among others, by A.T. Kearney Consulting Agency. India has been gaining power over other countries due to the fact that it offers low costs of highly-qualified workers who speak English fluently. The development of the third sector has been focused on several categories of service up till now (IT services, business, communication, banking, hotels and restaurant services), and can boast high levels of growth also in other areas: legal services, transportation, insurance, services and those connected with real estate. A great number of companies all over the world take advantage of Indian IT, which facilitates the development of a considerable part of Indian society. It is not only places of work for thousands of Indian people which are guaranteed by foreign companies, but first of all sharing of cutting-edge technologies and know-how. The article attempts at synthetic characterisation of the service sector and its meaning for Indian economy.
