The Grammar of the Romanian Chromatic Terms

Summary/Abstract: The main Romanian color terms are inherited from Latin and they are: rosu, galben, albastru, alb, negru, verde, vânat. These terms are part of the basic vocabulary being also representative terms. In Romanian only six color names (rosu, galben, albastru, verde; alb and negru – considered noncolors) have the potential of grouping other color names around them (vânat is a type of albastru). Strictly grammatically speaking, we focused our attention on some aspects considered relevant for our analysis: derivation – with adjectival, diminutival and augmentative suffixes –; prefixation; compounding; homonimies and even pleonasms.
