Summary/Abstract: Free access to new technologies, general access to the Internet and information, new types of social interrelationships by means of technology – all these are the facts demanding a change in our approach to learning and teaching. Information- communicational technologies, especially the Broadband Internet, are the key element in achieving a society of knowledge. This paper will deal with and compare the characteristics of individual wireless technologies from the standpoint of their application in the e-learning. Presented in this paper is the research whose aim was to examine the benefits of using mobile devices in instruction. The data gathering was done in the 2012/13 academic year by a questionnaire on an occasional sample of the first year students of computer science, class teaching, and geography at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Education in Mostar (N = 152). The aim of the research was to see what the habits of students are when they use cellular phones, what students do through cell phones on the Internet, and what they expect from cell phones as an instruction device. A comparison was also made with similar researches carried out in the world. The researches of this kind can show us in what way we can best use a cell phone in teaching, i.e. we can conclude what wireless and mobile communication networks are best to invest into.
