Summary/Abstract: This article seeks to point out the great role that the Benedictine theologian Odo Casel (1886-1948) had in the rediscovery of the Eucharist’s ecclesiastical dimension. The contribution of the monk of Maria-Laach monastery revolves around the in-depth study of the concepts of “mystery” (sacrament), through which the Eucharist is examined in the larger context of the salvation history, and “memorial”, a key term to explain the Eucharist celebration as a sacrifice. In analyzing this primacy of the Eucharist, the Benedictine monk shows that the identity of the Church is determined by it being part of the mystery of Christ. One of the most important merits of Casel’s work comes from his thorough study of the strong association between the mystery of the Eucharistic celebration and the mystery of the Church.
