Summary/Abstract: There is a common opinion, that activities, in which a child has to perceive regularities and act according to rules, stimulate its mental development. This fact, described in scientific literature, was a main inspiration for my own research, conducted in the years 2003–2005. I enlisted 1335 children aged 4–7 from the south-eastern Poland. Tiling was the basic research method. The aim was to create a jigsaw using the tiles provided. The research question was: How does creating relations on a plane, by children aged 4–7, take place? In-depth questions were as following: – Can the ways of organizing regularity on a plane be ordered according to children’s age? – What is the relationship between the way 6-year-old children create patterns on a plane, and their subsequent achievements at school, in the 1-st grade? Results, gathered during the research, show that ability of creating the geometrical patterns by children, appeared at a high degree. This attitude dominates in the group of 6-year-old children. In addition, there is a vivid connection between a regular use of geometrical patterns by 6-year-old children and their high achievements in the first grade at school.
