Summary/Abstract: The article tends to investigate the cause of interest of envy in modern society. Different speech practices in the framework of cultures characteristic to different languages are being analyzed. On the basis of colligating different philosophical and psychological approaches of the concept of “envy”, the article focuses on Russian discourse of envy (zavist) and attempts to specify the interpretation of word envy, describe “the Russian grammar” of envy and make an attempt of presenting national specifics of undergoing this feeling. The specifics of envy situation is analyzed invoking the “coordinates” – vertical and horizontal. The change of the coordinates gives rise to social envy, which is universal collision and special “white” envy which might be characterized as a Russian phenomenon.
