Summary/Abstract: Emigration is one of the strongest generators of breath to the life of the Albanian people. The main role of income from emigration lies in providing a guarantee of survival, especially under the conditions of a very poor economic life and an almost complete lack of economic production over quite a long period. In such a context, the income from emigration is rather a matter of survival than a source of development. It has greatly improved the life of individuals and families, it has reinvigorated the life of the whole country, it has educated people with the sense of work, discipline and new cultures, it has given more space to the activity of individuals and the state through the indirect employment of those who are not emigrating, and it has also provided opportunities for the free movement and involvement of Albanian citizens in the international environment. However, after almost a decade of experience of emigration in Albania, there are no evident signs of a returning immigration, nor are there indications of serious investment being made out of the capital sources provided by emigrants. Yet, during the last decade, we can see an ageing of the first generation of emigrants, while the second generation has not, up to now, actively entered the economic and social life of the host country.
