European Union's Identity Politics: in "search for little Madeleine's cookies"

Summary/Abstract: This article indicates the relevance of shaping European identity for the legitimacy of decisions by the European Union’s institutions. Firstly, main directions and characteristics of debates about the relevance of collective identities for understanding the society and politics are shown. The significant place that the identity politics takes in contemporary political researches is emphasized. Main directions of identity construction in fundamental European Union’s documents are elaborated, as well as acceptance of supra-national European identity by the EU citizens. Main scientific hypothesis about shaping European identity is also shown. Political-cultural presuppositions which could possibly serve as construction material to future constructors of European identity are specified.
