Summary/Abstract: In this article the problems of the Lithuanian seamen’s needs of the self-education are analyzed, their valuable orientations are opened. The seamen according to the specifics of their work are a social group, isolated from their families, intimates and friends and also from external sources of information. When return home the seamen have to adapt to a life on shore, change the habits and the rhythm of life in the main, and all this things cause them a lot of social and psychological problems. The data of a research, which aim was to ascertain to what the seamen give preference in their lives and to what orientate in the process of the self-education, shows that the biggest part of the tested seamen prefer sociocentric value – the family. It is highly evaluated anthropocentric values also – health and money. Also the seamen mark the sociocentric value – work. The less important is extremely anthropocentric value – the power, also – transcendental value – religion. The nationality of the seamen is a quite important factor, which makes influence on their needs of self-education: Lithuanian seamen are mostly disposed to follow sociocentric values, Ukrainian – anthropocentric. The family status is also an important factor, which makes influence on the self-education of the seamen: married people more time and attention allot for their families, single – for themselves. The analysis of the seamen’s needs of self-education helps better understand the peculiarities of their lives and activities, to understand their problems, to ascertai the relations between neighbouring and themselves.
