Summary/Abstract: Do modern languages capture the true meaning of the Archaic Greek term hybris? Scholarly opinions vary a great deal and interpretations of the relevant texts (from Homer to Pindar) are still problematic. Based on the analysis provided, I offer a new hypothesis regarding the relation between the term and the first element in the binary opposition of nature / culture suggested by Claude Lévi-Strauss. To my mind the numerous meanings of hybris can be ultimately combined into the idea of “behavior related to nature and opposed to culture”.
