Summary/Abstract: The issue of the optimal size of local government is an important area of research. A comparative analysis with other countries in the European Union does not equivocally resolve the major advantages of small municipalities. In the paper the model of P. Swiniewicz and M. Herbst synthetic indicator based on the efficiency of subdivision is used. Three main factors were distinguished in it: economic potential, ability to perform public services and local democracy. As a result of the calculations interesting results in the optimalization of the size of local government units were obtained, depending on the selected profile. It can be concluded that the optimal size of the community is in the range 22 500 – 30 000 inhabitants.
