Summary/Abstract: Dimiter Matov was born in Veles, graduated in Slavonic philology in Kharkov (Russia), and specialized under W. Jagitsch (Vienna) and A. Leskin (Leipzig). Matov was the first lecturer in ethnography at. Sofia University and editor of the Sbornik za narodni umotvorenija i knigopis (Miscellany of Folklore and Literature). His work as a scholar was in the sphere of Bulgarian ethnography, dialectology and folklore. In his short, but extraordinarily dynamic life (he died at the age of 32), thanks to his exceptionally extensive knowledge in the sphere of classical antiquity, Dimiter Matov made a number of far-reaching and thorough studies of an ethnographic, dialectological and folkloristic character on the traditional material and spiritual culture, dialects and folklore of the Bulgarians in Western Bulgaria. Born and bred in these regions, he was very well acquainted with the ethno-cultural and ethno-linguistic relations in the region of Macedonia. In his numerous critical reviews of many researches by foreign scholars Matov corrected with patriotic conviction the liberties they took in interpreting many phenomena. These reviews became, in most cases, independent scholarly contributions to Bulgarian national culture in the southwesternmost Bulgarian lands. Dimiter Matov's scholarly work is a valuable contribution to the development of the Bulgarian ethnographic science.
