Summary/Abstract: The appearance and spread of the ethnonym Serbians (Rom sirbi) with the meaning 'Bulgarians' in the Romanian language and Romanian toponymy is studied on the basis of certain data obtained so far from written sources and from the reflection of the ethnonym in contemporary and historical Romanian macrotoponymy. The first data on the ethnonym Serbians go back to the early 15th century, but the data of the 18th and 19th centuries are particularly abundant, this being the time when the. migration of the Bulgarian population to trans-Danubian lauds took place on a particularly mass scale. The author stresses the supposed reasons owing to which the ethnonym Serbians acquired the meaning 'Bulgarians' and the ethnonym Bilgariano was not widespread in the toponymy of the Romanian lands and has undergone a complex semantic evolution in the Romanian language --- processes, realized in the complex situation of ethnic relationships.
