Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to point to the role played among other countries by the United States as an exporter and importer of direct investment. The USA are ranked as number one in the world with regard to the value of the outward and in ward FDI stock. In the context of categories of the relation of investment to the economic potential the rank of the country is decidedly lower. The main area of investment for the USA are services, and the balance of direct investment is a debit one. The most important place of investment as well as the most important foreign investor is Great Britain. Significant bilateral partners also include Canada, Japan, France, Netherlands and Germany. Along with the transformations of the world economy changes occur in the structures of American investment, however, the USA have remained one of the most important “players” in the world market of foreign investment for years.
