Summary/Abstract: Croatia has supported the process of economic and political bilateral and multilateral co-operation, bringing to an end a period of political and economic isolation. The Croatian Government has identified EU accession as its first priority, a move supported by the public, with 70 per cent of population ‘voting’ for EU accession. Democratisation and liberalisation in post-socialist period have raised questions concerning the right of nations to choose autonomy among former republics of Yugoslavia. Subsequent war in the region and ethnic unrest in Kosovo and Macedonia demonstrated the weak foundations of existing peaceful conflict resolution, and the need for the wider community to contribute to the restoration of peace. In this context, Croatia has supported all regional initiatives undertaken by the EU, UN and the USA aimed at fostering regional integration provided that new political alliances, such as the restoration of some kind of Balkan Union/Federation, do not appear on the agenda.
