Summary/Abstract: This paper first presents certain key elements of the classic theory of contextuality of the Qurʼan, which the author recognises through the classical, hermeneutical principle that the Qur’an interprets itself – the principle that implies the contextual method in interpreting it. The author then analyses modern linguistic views on context and its role in determining meaning, and then investigates different aspects of contextuality of the Qur’an, through writings by contemporary Muslim linguists. In such writings, the author locates the following contextual aspects of the Qur’an: the general, the thematic and the linguistic context of the Qur’an (Salwā al-‘Awwā), the context of the ayet, the text, the surah and the Qur’anic text as a whole (Abū Safiyya al-Hārithī), the context of situations and topics (Ahmad Mukhtār ‘Umar). The author also presents a bibliographical overview of recent linguistic studies, which uses contextual linguistic to research different contextual levels of Qur’anic texts. At the end of the paper, the author presents his key arguments, emphasizing that in modern times, it is necessary for different reasons to re-affirm the contextual method of interpreting the Qur’an.
