Summary/Abstract: In Oriental-Islamic tradition, thus in the Bosniak tradition, memorisation of the Qur’an (hifz) is very important. This fascinating activity, unparalleled in other civilisations and dating back to the Prophet, p.b.u.h., and the first chapters received, evolved over the centuries into a very powerful institution. There are numerous Muslims across the world, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, who have memorised the entire Qur’anic text. Still, little is known about the nature of this phenomenon and the ways the text is acquired. There are unwritten rules on the ways to memorise it, dating back to the time of arrival of the Ottomans to this region. Due to the enormous value of this tradition, there has never been any detailed elaboration of the different methods of memorising the Qur’an, as that would necessitate an examination and even an objective criticism of the tradition itself. This paper tries to indicate some of the different methods and their advantages and disadvantages. Within that context, rather than offering a solution to all the problems a hifz student encounters, this text should be an invitation to all the intellectual forces of Muslim scholars to search for better and easier methods for memorising the Qur’an, and to present systematically a new field of science that would serve the needs of hifz.
