Summary/Abstract: he fundamental function of language is one - communication. In the process of translating creative texts, however, it is important, not only to transmit information but also, to express the aesthetic function of language. Since each text is unique due to an artistic, individual style and an intertwining of the communicational and aesthetic language functions, a translator of fictional literature unavoidably finds him or herself between linguistics and art. The objective for the linguistic and stylistic analysis in this article is to discuss the distinctive phenomena of the system and style of the Lithuanian language along with aspects relevant to translating the language into French. The research object includes the usual causes of translation problems, such as the linguistic phenomena (features of semantic lexicon, specifics of expression for certain Lithuanian words and others) and the figure of style - the phraseology. The research material comprises the translations of four current Lithuanian stories into French.
