NECESSITY OF REHABILITATION AND MODERNIZATION OF THE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS OF THE CĂLMATUI BASIN IN THE TELEORMAN COUNTY

Summary/Abstract: This study presents the necessity of rehabilitation and modernization of the irrigation systems of the Călmăţui Basin in the Teleorman county, due to the specific morpho-pedological conditions, extremely favorable to cultivation of plants (among the most favorable areas in the country; about 80% of the basin surface being covered by lands favorable to agriculture). Despite these favorable conditions, the drought and dry periods with a quite high frequency in the warm period (April-October) produce extremely damaging effects upon the agriculture. Another arguments in favor to the rehabilitation and modernization of the irrigation systems are the studies made upon the quality of soils and phreatic waters in the region after setting operational the irrigation systems Olt-Călmăţui and Viişoara, which are, nowadays, abandoned and out of work.
