Summary/Abstract: The conception of political community in Hannah Arendt’s thought does not correspond to the prevalent conceptualization of polity by political theory insofar it incorporates a rather rudimentary and non-systematic theory of institutions, which is considered the inevitable, fundamental component of the theory of polity, alongside the theory of its normative framework. In contrast to the procedural and substantive theories of political community, Arendt understands community through action, offering a performative concept of polity. This paper attempts to investigate the potentials of such understanding of community as a possible way to overcome the theoretical tension generated by the dichotomy institution-action/stability-change/order-freedom, which characterizes the dominant theoretical currents in political philosophy.
