Summary/Abstract: The paper gives an overview of existing generative approaches to the derivation of cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions in English and attempts to offer a simple, minimalist account of the way in which these constructions are generated, with focus on the possibility of reversing the order of the wh-clause and the counterweight in specificational, but not predicational pseudo-clefts.
