Summary/Abstract: The author of the article presents the notion of the understanding of the pedagogical education process by Pedagogy students at state universities and academies. The author shows the results of empirical research whose theoretical basis are: the thought of phenomenology and the theses of symbolic interactionism. The research was conducted in 2006 among over 1,500 Pedagogy students at four Polish universities and three academies of Pedagogy. The test of incomplete sentences was used there. The analysis of students’ statements allowed the author to answer the questions what categories and notions students use in their language to describe the study and the process of pedagogical education. The analysis also allowed the author to define the level of understanding these concepts. To describe “study” the students used categories like: profession – labour, selfdevelopment, form of study (an external description of actions during studies). To describe “the process of education” they used phrases such as: knowledge of education, knowledge of the human, experience of education, labour, effect of actions during studies. The author also reveals the differences which appeared in the answers of students from different universities, academies and different years of studying.
