Summary/Abstract: The pattern of employment in a country’s three economic sectors is one of key determinants of socio-economic development. According to Fourastie’s three-sector theory, the most economically advanced countries are currently in the phase of transitional period (characterized by a high level of employment in service sector and the decrease of employment in industrial sector), while maintaining of “third civilization” (where about 80% of population is employed in service sector) should occur in the half of this century [Kwiatkowska et al. 1993]. Numerous studies have shown that the speed of transformation of employment pattern in Poland puts it far behind other countries of “old” EU. The foregoing study will present the assessment of transformations of employment pattern in Poland and particular EU countries, which occurred in 2004, considering especially the changes taking place in the service sector in Poland.
