Tests in the Form of Contests in Folktales

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the present study is the test in the form of a contest dealt with on two levels: diachronic and synchronic. Not all tests in the structure of fairy tales are of the type under discussion. Of special interest in our study are the negative damaging tests which are always in the form of contest and additional tests, a kind of travesty of the preceding structural elements in the fairy tale edifice. In carrying over the formula synthesizing the mediative nature of fairy tale onto contest games in tales about tricksters a “reversal” of the second type of tale vis-à-vis the first is to be observed. This “reversal” has not happened automatically. The evolution of the fairy tale goes hand in hand with the passing of the hero from one extremity of the passivity vs. activity opposition to the other.
